Lula Mae

Lula Mae, may I see you today?  I know you’re in that house

I saw you hanging clothes on the line, in a black and white blouse

The boys that see you at night, don’t know what’s on your mind

Or what’s behind those big brown eyes, you’re just passing time

You don’t see what you want to see

And where you want to be ain’t so easy to get to

I hear what you don’t say, Lula Mae

Lula Mae, may I see you tonight? If the rain stops coming down

Maybe walk out to the Rio Grande, it’s not too far from town

If you make it out to New York City, I have to see for myself

How different your life’s become, just take care of yourself

There’s nothing here for you, paradise is waiting on your cue

Others may tell you what to do, believe in what you want to

You go chase those dreams instead, I’ll hold on to every word you said

It’ll break my heart to watch you walk away

Walk on anyway, Lula Mae

Blue

The sky can’t be that grey my friend, look up from your tell-all tool

Why do you look so blue?

If you’re an old soul, I’ve been called worse, it’s true

Every old soul was a young soul, too

Why do you look so blue?

So a few things might’ve turned out wrong

So the road looks a little too long

The current will turn around for you

When the wind blows right and sailors are sincere and true

Do your eyes glow in the moonlight? I can’t tell with your head tilt down

Why do you look so blue?

Smile for a moment and I’ll smile for days

When’s the last time you smiled?

So a few things might’ve turned out wrong

So the road looks a little too long

The current will turn around for you

When the wind blows right and sailors are sincere and true

It won’t feel like he bought you flowers, that won’t matter any more

Flowers die and you’re still here, he won’t matter any more

Waiting around won’t do much good, let’s go out and light our fuse

I’ll meet you out where the sunlight ends and the moon won’t care what we choose

Why do you look so blue?

Why do you look so blue?

Why do you look so blue?

The Fighter

I’m living down on fifth street, tonight I’ll stay in Clawson

A little girl, she takes care of me, every so often

It’s easy to lose track, of what it is you’re working toward

Living every day, in a world that just ain’t yours

I’m far removed from being the fighter I once knew

I don’t drive by that BP sign, shines a flashback in the night

It wasn’t that long ago, I’d pump your gas just to say hello

Oh, but people change, I heard nothing stays the same

And I ain’t got the strength to win your heart back

I’m far removed from being the fighter I once knew

People ask me where you’ve been

Have I picked up the needle and bottle again

I just smile and turn away

I visit Grandpa’s grave, light a cigarette, think of what he’d say

I can see him flicking ash, saying it’ll be okay

Oh, but T-shirts fade, when all this money rolls away

All we’re left with is the blood in our veins

I’m far removed from being the fighter I once knew

I’m far removed from being the fighter I once knew

Independence Moon

Fireworks rising up behind me, light up the sky this 4th of July

There’s an urge to let freedom find me, follow the howl, let the wheels fly

‘cause I feel like a stranger in the place I call home

Walking down Union this town is alive, right about time for the bars to let out

I dare not go inside, I’m afraid to find you walking about

The stars are burning bright, and I don’t trust myself

Oh, I swear, I feel you breathe

Oh, It’s just a funny moon playing tricks on me

I’ve tasted good and evil, in the bedroom and the bar

Trying to find out if The Pilgrim was right

Is the going up really worth the coming down?

My bag is packed, this bus pulls out any minute now

What town comes next, I don’t know, I lost track of the exit signs long ago

But I finally feel free, nowhere I need to be

Truth is, late night, real late at night

I’m alone but I’m not lonely

For a dreamer, there’s one time of day

All the rest just flutter away

For now my mind’s at ease knowing no one’s waiting up for me
